Located in Niagara County, NY, the hamlet of Ransomville traces its roots to the early 1800s. The Curtiss family—brothers Gideon and Capt. Gilbert Curtiss—were the first to settle in the area in the 1820s, establishing important connections with neighboring communities.
Ransomville was officially established in 1842 and named after William Henry Harrison Ransom. The son of immigrants from Sullivan County in the Hudson River Valley, W.H.H. Ransom arrived in Niagara County in 1839, where he built and worked a farm with his wife, Elisa Estes Ransom.
In 1846, he purchased a general store from his uncle, Jehiel Ransom, who had lived in Niagara County since 1826 and served as postmaster. W.H.H. Ransom went on to raise 13 children and remained a central figure in the community until his death on December 29, 1889, at the age of 74.
